HIsmelt: HRDF Deconstruction Project, Western Australia
In July 2002 Monadelphous was the successful tenderer for the "HIsmelt HRDF Deconstruction Project". As the name suggests, this project entailed the deconstruction and removal from site of a substantial portion of the existing plant in preparation for the construction of the new commercial facility later in 2003-2004.
The HIsmelt HRDF facility in Kwinana was Rio Tinto’s research and development plant for the commercialisation of the HIsmelt direct iron making process. By the project’s end, Monadelphous had deconstructed over 4000 tonnes of steel (sold for recycling) and disposed of over 500 tonnes of concrete to registered landfill sites. Employing approximately 60 people at its peak, the project was successfully completed in November 2002 (approximately one month ahead of schedule) with an exceptional safety record. |
