Boyne Smelters Limited: Mechanical Trades Contract, Gladstone QLD

  • Strong local site knowledge delivers advantage
  • Recognised for LTI Free operation since the start of contract

In July 2005 Monadelphous was awarded the Mechanical Trades Alliance Contract for Boyne Smelters Limited, (BSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto Aluminium. BSL is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter. The smelter produces more than half a million tonnes of aluminium each year from its three reduction lines.

The Mechanical Trades Alliance Contract is a two year plus two year contract including mechanical maintenance and project works, workshop and fabrication services. The scope of work is challenging and broad and includes maintenance and minor project works and also the provision of supplementary labour to BSL as required.

The maintenance work and minor project are executed so as to minimise production downtime. The normal manning levels are around 50 but can increase depending on the capital works programme.

Monadelphous has assigned a management team and dedicated Site Manager to execute the alliance style contract which includes the provision for extension based on performance.

During the 2005/06 review period a major shutdown was carried out to install a new rotary breaker. This involved removing the existing rotary breaker and modifying the plant to fit the new one. This shutdown was completed on time and without incident. A significant advantage for BSL is Monadelphous’ site knowledge and understanding of the plant and environment that continuously ensures the shutdown critical path is met.

The contract team is proud to have achieved over 180 000 man hours LTI free.
