BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA): Hay Point Coal Terminal, Mackay QLD
The Hay Point Coal Terminal is owned by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). BMA markets coal to steel mill customers globally, and is increasing the throughput capacity to its Hay Point Coal Terminal south of Mackay by almost 30 per cent, to 44 Mtpa a year. The expansion works involves the construction of the Line 3 coal handling conveyor system, increasing stockpile and terminal throughput capacity for BMA. Monadelphous was awarded the contract in May 2005 to construct the civil, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical works for Line 3. This includes the supply, detailing, fabrication, transport, installation and commissioning of several new coal conveyors and transfer tower systems, and brownfields work consisting of the integration and upgrade of two existing conveyors. The construction of this project during the wet season provided scheduling challenges to the project team. The flexible approach and ability to source additional staff to address this challenge enabled the team to minimise delays. The Monadelphous team maintained an excellent safety record throughout the project, which is scheduled to reach practical completion in September 2006. |
