BHP Billiton Iron Ore: Rapid Growth Project 3 (RGP3), Port Hedland WA

  • Monadelphous secures significant contract
  • Over 300 employees mobilised

In March 2006, the award of the RGP3 project represented the largest contract awarded to Monadelphous to date. Having been involved in all stages of BHP Billiton’s expansion projects in Western Australia since 2002, the award of this contract demonstrates the company’s capability to deliver large-scale projects. The structural and mechanical works will upgrade the existing port facilities to handle increased production capacity to 129 Mtpa in line with BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s ongoing mine expansion.

The project includes the modification of conveyors to boost capacity coupled with the installation of additional conveyors and associated transfer stations and pipe-work. The works include the upgrade of a dual cell rail car dumper and the provision of ship-loading conveyors on the upgraded Finucane Island wharf. It is anticipated that at its peak over 300 employees will be on site.

Safety leadership and performance has been a key focus and new safety initiatives have been implemented with site management.

Completion of the project is scheduled for the December quarter 2007.
