BHP Billiton: Nelson Point Project, Western Australia

A Monadelphous team worked closely and strategically with the client, BHB Billiton Iron Ore, to minimise the impact of numerous shutdowns during the upgrade of its port facilities. The contract was awarded in November 2002 and a Monadelphous team began mobilisation to site in January 2003.

The work involved the upgrade of the existing conveyors, installation of larger motors and new idlers, refurbishment of pulleys and various other mechanical, civil, structural and electrical works. Two new transfer stations and one new complete conveyor were also installed. The upgrades will increase the export capacity by over 40%, from 67 mtpa to 81 mtpa by 2004.

Shutdowns mean lost productivity, so Monadelphous quickly developed a close working relationship with the client and prepared detailed, by-the-hour plans to minimise the impact on the port’s operations. Certain sections of the operating plant were isolated during brief windows of opportunity in the shipping schedule, during which Monadelphous quickly moved in to perform preparatory work, thereby gaining a head start before a shutdown.

The project reached practical completion, according to schedule, in July 2003.
